Bandcamp is waiving its fees on Friday, July 3, so I'm going to donate their share and also match it and give it to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.
I'd been playing out these two songs in my DJ sets over the past year before the lockdown, and without any gigs or anything coming up, I just felt like releasing them.
"Jan's Hammer" started life in 2010 as a song for my old band, DVAS, but after that project collapsed in a train wreck of tears and broken dreams, the song sat on a hard drive for the better part of a decade. Fast forward to 2019, I was looking for some pics on my old laptop and found "Jan's Hammer" and decided the chords were too good to waste! So I brushed it off, spiffed it up and raised the BPM and it seemed to work in the clubs.
"Jan" was due to be released this year on a high-profile dance music label, but after seeing the onerous contract on offer, I decided I'd just release it myself.
Meanwhile, "Spooky Funk" was going to be a followup to "Look At My Car" as it has a similar bass sound (the fretless bass!), but I couldn't write a tune to match it, so it's also just been sitting around, collecting dust in my brain!
Anyway, making and releasing music is vital to me, and if I don't do it, these tunes sit in my head and cause me problems, a bit like leaving something in the fridge for too long.
So there you have it: No big ideas or anything, just some music that is pretty uptempo and positive, so hopefully it brightens up your day or workout or walk or whatever!
